A new year is a new beginning, which presents an opportunity to set clear goals for yourself. Right now, everyone is scrambling to make actionable resolutions before the end of the year. It may not seem like much, but the right set of resolutions can provide healthcare providers (HCPs) direction for their personal and professional journeys. To start the year off right, here are 5 New Year’s resolutions worth considering, if you are an HCP.
Build healthy habits
Healthcare is a physically demanding line of work. HCPs are asked to stand on their feet for hours, lift heavy objects from room to room, and more. While building healthy habits does not only better prepare you for the rigorous of healthcare life, it will also improve your mood and self image in general. Working out also releases oxytocin, which makes it the perfect activity to destress and unwind after a busy day. You can take up gym classes or a yoga routine if you wish, but even taking a daily walk can make a huge difference.
Expand your professional network
Like any other profession, your success in healthcare may be determined by your connections. A good network of HCPs allows you to hear about job opportunities early, but the benefits run deeper than this. Healthcare as an industry has unique qualities and demands that few people can really relate to. If you are having trouble finding your niche or progressing on a professional level, insight from fellow professionals who have been there before can make a significant difference. When you expand your professional network, you expand your opportunities on the whole.
Take some time for yourself
There will be times where everything feels “too much.” Whenever the weight of your HCP work is truly getting to you, do not be afraid to spend paid leave on yourself. Healthcare workers can only provide the best possible car when they are mentally and physically rested and rejuvenated. Book yourself a long weekend to spend time on any of your hobbies or interests. If you primarily book shifts with VitaWerks and earn your living that way, then set aside a couple days and make up the deficit in later weeks. This is just a sample of the kind of flexibility that our VitaHeroes are afforded.
Invest in your nursing career
As a healthcare professional, you know just how dynamic and ever-changing the industry can be. Continuing education requirements are intended to keep HCPs up to date with the latest developments in the industry, but you can take it a step further. Go above and beyond by attending virtual seminars, taking classes for extra certifications, reading nursing journals, and more. This allows you to continue growing and evolving as an HCP, while showing facilities you are committed to progressing your career and moving forward.
Go easy on yourself
This may seem counterintuitive, but it is well worth keeping in mind. 2023 was a long year for everyone, healthcare professionals included. At times it can feel difficult to gauge exactly where the healthcare industry is going, and where your own career is headed. Whenever you feel like you are not “moving fast enough,” just remind yourself that it is not a race. You are meeting your goals and resolutions at your own pace.
